Civil Unions
There's been a flap of letters to the editors in the New London Day of late on both sides of the "question," one of which, in particular, attacked, not only my own congregation, but also our beloved minister (who, by the way, is in a wonderful (same-sex) relationship of 14 years along with their great daughter (who is, in fact, very well-adjusted to Life (probably because she's lucky enough to have two moms, instead of a dad (we men tend to screw up these sort of things from time to time))).
Anyhow, the other night, after a few of us had our post-Earth Day meeting session at the Dutch (our favorite watering hole), I got home and at 2 am I hit the send key to put my own two cents into the fray.
You know what? They actually printed it!
Letter To The Editor:
I try to smile over the irony of the many letters of late in opposition to civil unions, if only to keep from crying over the blatant insensitivity of which we are all capable toward one another.
The irony is, of course, that many (but, thankfully, not all) Christians, with their saber-rattling rhetoric of “holy wars,” seem to be in direct opposition to Jesus' overall message of love.
I was particularly saddened with the extremely negative rhetoric of Father Constantine Simones toward another long-established faith community and its minister (“Many Christians don't support gay unions,” April 25).
When, however, I read his admonition that we “must draw a line in the sand,” I was able to smile again, because his own words reminded me of a few precious lines written long ago by Edwin Markham: “He drew a circle that shut me out; Rebel, heretic, a thing to flout. But love and I had the wit to win; We drew a circle that took him in.”
Why don't we all just try a little kindness toward each other for a change, OK?
It really is that simple.
