Oh Happy Day

Just got my new Surly Long Haul Trucker and, after somewhat of a struggle,
I finally got it together and went our for our first 10-mile ride.

I should have had my iPod Wannabe (Philips) ear-buds stuck in my ears
with Willie singing "On the Road Again."

Rackin' Up the Miles

Nobody is interested in this, but, you know what(?), I don't care!

Did 18 miles today. Only had to stop three times. Once to readjust my seat (it was tilted at about 45 degrees on first ride and, after setting it right, it came loose after about two miles); once to stick the cuffs of my jeans into my socks so that they didn't get caught in the gears; and finally, I heard something loose and thought: "Hmmm ... I should check that noise out sometime soon" when I heard a KERCHUNK! and went back looking for what might have fallen off when I noticed that my hiking boots (what can I say ... it's all I had at the time to wear) had loosened one of the two spare spokes on my left wheel stay (this bike has many bells and whistles) and it came loose and decided to emulate the Book of Kells with my rear wheel (Damn!).

Still, I LOVE THIS BIKE!!! (Thanks to my big Bro for steering me toward it ... we now have identical Honda Elements and almost identical Surly Bikes).

Now up to 28 miles (what does that compute to dollars per mile ... I will make a major announcemet when I get to under a dollar a mile - right now, it's still a pretty heady rate).

Oh, wait! I had to stop a fourth time too. My front brake was constantly rubbing; I just realigned my front wheel, but, well, the whole bike needs some major readjustment to my somewhat unique body and riding ... that's half the fun, right?

Enough!

Keep on Truckin' for Peace!

Douglas

Is the picture before or after you adjusted the seat? If it's after, hmmm, I'd do another forward tip.

Levis? Boots?

Forget Willie, Mendelssen's Symphony #4 from Breaking Away.

Me?

I'm the brother with the Camion Rouge.

The picture is a "before" (but after the first 10-mile butt wrenching ride).

Today's was ever so much more enjoyable (not only angle-wise, but also sliding the seat forward a few inches meant I could reach the brakes).

Oh Sweet Jeezum Crow! How could I forget about Mendelssohn (or however you spell it - ok, I admit ... I looked it up on Wikipedia)! I must recharge the batteries on my iPod wannabee and hit the road with a flask of Limoncello and Felix's #4 blasting in my ears ... can Life get any better?).

Keep on Truckin' in Peace!

Yes, life can get better.

As in rolling out of Shannon airport with a loaded bike and nothing scheduled for two months.
